In Ararat itself, the township oozes history. Formerly a gold mining town, the buildings reflect the prosperity of a bygone era with many buildings dating back to the late 1800s. There are historical museums, parks and gardens, galleries, lookouts, former prisons and lunatic asylums, and a Chinese Heritage Centre. The town also has a vibrant dining scene with restaurants, cafés, pubs and takeaway options.
