Discovery Parks – Mount Surprise (formerly Bedrock Village Caravan Park) is a well-established hub for travellers exploring the Savannah Way in Queensland.
Full of references to the areas rail and mining history, the park has a friendly, social atmosphere with a communal campfire, general store, mini-golf course and outdoor dining area.
ACCOMMODATION
Stay on one of 75 drive-through powered sites or in one of 35 self-contained air conditioned cabins, each nestled below a generous canopy of hinterland forest.
All tent and van sites are spacious, and close to the amenities block and camp kitchen. Rooms and units range from basic single rooms to superior one and two bedroom self-contained cabins, complete with covered deck and outdoor furniture. All cabins feature ensuites, air conditioning and linen supplied.
For the budget minded traveller, on-site units have their own ensuite, television, kitchenette, bar fridge, microwave, toaster, kettle, utensils for the camp kitchen, BBQ and verandah.
The Copperfield cabins are open-plan, stand-alone cabins and are fully self-contained. Cabin features include a fully-equipped kitchen, with twin and queen bed configurations. An accessible cabin for the disabled is also available.
The Savannahlander Cabins feature two bedrooms, and are suitable for families or friends travelling together. Choose between queen beds in each room or a queen in one and a set of singles in the other. Enjoy a large, shady and secluded verandah, and a combined kitchen/dining area.
The Fossilbrook Cabins are ideal for the traveling family, and the largest of the property’s cabins. They have a queen and bunk bed, plus a lounge that folds out to a king single. Large bush tables under an awning are just outside the front door – ideal for afternoon entertaining, while a large grassy area provides a great place for the kids to run around. The pool is also just a splash away!
FACILITIES
Facilities inside the park include accessible accommodation and amenities, a relaxing saltwater pool, general store and pet-minding service. There is also a laundry with dryer and clothesline, a campfire where social events take place, an outdoor dining area, a mini-golf course and Wi-Fi for all guests.
The general store offers basic groceries and everyday items to help out travellers on the road, while an onsite mechanic will help you stay out there for longer should the need arise.
Two camp kitchens are available with free gas BBQs, there is an air conditioned conference centre for anyone looking to host a unique outback event.
Amenities blocks are modern and well-maintained, the park has a book exchange facility and there is free internet access available throughout the park.
NEAR PARK EXPERIENCES
The Savannah Way throws up so many potential adventures and iconic attractions. The section between Cairns and Mount Surprise sees you transition from lush tropical rainforest to outback tablelands.
Along the way you can visit the Arthurton Tablelands, where you can swim under a waterfall and buy from a farmer’s market. Talaroo Hot Springs is not to be missed and the nearby Undara Volcanic Caves are an unexpected highlight for many visitors. Train lovers will also enjoy a scenic ride on the Savannahlander.
