THINGS TO DO NEAR KERANG HOLIDAY PARK

Staff here are only too happy to play tour guide during your time in-park. Given Kerang Holiday Park’s location in one of the most popular parts of Victoria’s much-loved Riverland, there’s no shortage of things to do nearby.

The town of Kerang itself is 25 kilometres inland from the Murray River, between the historic Murray River border town of Swan Hill and the agricultural community of Cohuna.

The Loddon River, a major tributary of the Murray, runs through Kerang and offers plenty of good fishing for keen anglers.

For those who love the water, Kerang Holiday Park is ideally located. Grouped along the Murray Valley Highway are the Kerang Wetlands which feature over 50 lakes, swamps and lagoons stretching from Lake Boga in the north to Kerang in the south. These wetlands are home to thousands of colourful and graceful water birds.

Several of the larger lakes, including Kangaroo Lake and Lake Charm, are popular with visitors for water sports, boating and fishing. Gorton Drive, named after former Australian Prime Minister Sir John Gorton, who was local to the area, and which runs along the western shore of Kangaroo Lake, is lined with jacaranda trees and citrus orchards. Well known winemakers the Brown Brothers established a vineyard next to the lake in the 1960s, and they still produce a number of exotic wines from these warm climate plantings.

As mentioned, Lake Charm is only 20km from the park and is one of Victoria’s favourite water sport playgrounds. Large enough to water ski, fish and swim, the lake is fitted with a number of boat ramps and every year plays host to the Redfin Fishing Classic competition.

Thirty minutes from the park is Gunbower Island, where kayakers can follow a series of numbered buoys on a 5km trail that takes about 2 hours to complete. Hire or bring your own kayak or canoe. Similarly, Gunbower National Park is an important sanctuary for birdwatching, bushwalking, fishing. Mountain-biking and canoeing.

Slightly closer to Kerang Holiday Park are a series of lakes that are ideal for picnicking, swimming and fishing. These include Reedy Lake and Lake Meran, while at Middle Lake, 10km north of Kerang holiday Park bird lovers gather in numbers to watch thousands of Ibis birds nest during their annual spring breeding season.
