Discovery Parks - Cloncurry
Park features
Cloncurry, 120km east of the nearest city of Mt Isa in Queensland, is a unique rest stop on your outback Australian adventure. This laid-back town is not just the birthplace of the Royal Flying Doctor Service, it was also the destination of the very first Qantas flight back in the 1920s, both of which are still celebrated in the town.
When visiting Cloncurry, your number one choice for accommodation should be Discovery Parks – Cloncurry. Steeped in outback beauty, the park offers both cabin accommodation and camp sites which are surrounded by majestic gums and which enjoy endless serenades by the native birdlife in the area.
If you’re looking for clean and fuss-free cabin accommodation, there are plenty of cabins to choose from. The Standard and Superior Cabins sleep 5 and 4 respectively and are fitted out with a kitchen, comfortable bedding, private bathrooms and air conditioning. For solo travellers, the Economy cabin is ideal, set up in compact style for a single person. If you prefer motel style accommodation, there are also rooms available, just right for a couple, which offer a kitchenette and a shady, comfortable outside area.
Many visitors arrive with the caravan or tent as they traverse the country, exploring the vast Australian outback. Discovery Parks – Cloncurry offers both powered and unpowered sites, many of them covered in grass and all benefiting from the mature, shady native trees which dot the entire park.
All visitors to Discovery Parks – Cloncurry are welcome to make use of the onsite facilities, which include a camp kitchen and BBQs for preparing a meal. There is also a restaurant onsite if you want a hearty home-cooked meal without having to cook it yourself. There is also a swimming pool to cool off from the hot outback sun, as well as an activity room and even an air-conditioned gym, so you can get in a workout while you’re travelling.
While in Cloncurry, you’ll be able to immerse yourself in the unique aviation history of the town. There is a museum set up specifically to honour Reverend John Flynn and his founding of the Royal Flying Doctor Service, as well as the original Qantas hanger where the first flight from Longreach finally ended. The area is also known for the many dinosaur fossils which have been unearthed there, not to mention the spectacular outback scenery and rough and rugged landscape.
But probably the best thing about a visit to Cloncurry will be the peace and silence you’ll experience when you come back to your accommodation in the evening and relax with a drink and a bite to eat. Enjoy the stars as you’ve never seen them in the city, and soak up the outback silence which only comes from such a remote location. This is an Australian experience like no other at Discovery Parks – Cloncurry.
