Discovery Resorts - Undara
Park features
Staying at Discovery Resorts - Undara is unlike any other hotel or holiday park in Australia. Known for its proximity to one of the world’s longest lava cave tube systems, it is also famous for its unique brand of outback hospitality.
Aimed at providing an authentic escape to the bush, guests can choose from a range of options suited to every budget. A Pioneer Hut provides all the modern comforts of home, including air-conditioning, a private bathroom and balcony. You can spend the night in a turn-of-the-century railway carriage, beautifully restored with their own ensuite and shared deck, or in one of six recently erected homesteads, also featuring a/c, an ensuite and balcony.
If sleeping in the great outdoors suits you better, there is a Swag Tent Village with beds and linen provided, a Safari Shelter designed for large groups, and a spacious caravan and camping area close to all amenities and BBQs.
Discovery Resorts - Undara also provides its guests with a range of facilities, tours, and activities to do. A half-day tour of the Undara Lava Tubes is a must when staying here, especially with the parks’ highly experience Savannah Guides.
Food and drink-wise, Fettler’s Iron Pot Bistro is open daily for lunch and dinner, where you can expect a wide variety of home-style fare. Think locally grown steaks, slow-cooked the old-fashioned way. And look out for a sweet tooth special called the ‘Chocolate Volcano.’
Meanwhile, breakfast goes bush every morning at Ringer’s Camp, where you can start your day with freshly brewed billy tea, then cook your own toast over the coals of a campfire!
The Saloon Car Bar is the park’s licensed premise, where you can enjoy a range of Australian and imported beers, wines, and spirits, as well as freshly ground espresso each morning!
Likely to also greet you each day is an array of Australian wildlife. Be ready for a close encounter with the local population of kangaroos, wallabies, and a wide range of birdlife from nearby tropical rainforest!
Easily accessible from Savannah Way, Discovery Resorts - Undara is three hours by car inland from Cairns, or about three-and-a-half hours from Townsville. You can choose from a range of difficulty levels, but whichever you do, your first hike inside the famous underground lava tubes will have your jaw dropped. This truly is a world-class geological phenomenon, and guests continue to marvel at this 190,000-year-old natural wonder.
As a delicate ecosystem that deserves our respect, all tours offered by Discovery Resorts - Undara are conducted within the auspices of the National Park Management Plan. This prescribes that all tours are guided, and each Discovery Resorts - Undara tour is hosted by highly trained Savannah Guides and are designed to provide an interactive and engaging experience for guests.
Each year the ‘biggest’ little festival in the outback also hits town. Check out dates for the annual Undara Outback Rock and Blues event, an amazing weekend of music and mates in one of Far North Queensland’s most unique locations.
