Carnarvon on the Indian Ocean in Western Australia is the gateway to spectacular natural beauty on land and sea. Set between the World Heritage listed Shark Bay to the south and Ningaloo Reef in the north, Carnarvon is rich in stories – both colonial and Indigenous.
 
People trek across Australia to see the 10,000 dugongs that gather in the protected Shark Bay, see earth’s oldest lifeforms, stromatolites, or snorkel through the coral at Ningaloo Reef. The Gwoonwardu Mia Aboriginal heritage and cultural centre is also a popular tourist attraction and the Burlganja Wanggaya: Old People Talking interactive exhibition provides stories of the five Aboriginal language groups of the region; Yinggarda, Bayungu, Malgana, Thadgari and Thalanyji. Carnarvon has a rich pastoral heritage and visitors can learn all about it and the Shearing Hall of Fame.
 
The town is set in the Gascoyne River delta – the Gascoyne River is known as the ephemeral river, an upside river that is a large water storage area under the desert and the region is renowned for its fresh produce, supplying Perth with fruit and vegetables in the winter months.

Kids will love the One Mile Jetty, the 1900s’ Light House Keeper’s Cottage, the Kennedy Range National Park and fish and chips on the beach – or prawns, scallops and crab for the more sophisticated. The Fascine Town Beach is a safe beach with a pontoon and a great spot for fishing or watching the sun go down over the ocean.
 
Capricorn Holiday Park has cabins that range from cosy 1-bedroom studios to deluxe family chalets. Most self-contained cabins and chalets have air conditioning and ensuites with linen supplied and additional blankets and bedding available on request. Chalets sleep up to six people easily and larger groups can be accommodated.
It’s also possible to bring your dog to one of the pet-friendly sites and those with large vehicles can be rest assured that there are sites large enough to accommodate them.  For those on a grand loop of WA, the park is the ideal place to rest and recuperate and stock up with supplies before venturing further. The park has daily supplies of fresh regional produce and is across the road from a well-stocked service station with travel supplies and fuel.
