Park Info

Karratha and the Pilbara, situated in the far north west of Western Australia, is a unique and ancient area, offering the perfect holiday location for the adventurous traveller.

Discovery Parks – Balmoral is a seasonal park, open from 1st May through to the 31st August when the weather is just right, with perfectly warm days and cool desert nights. Acting as the ideal location from which to explore the area, Discovery Parks – Balmoral offers both powered and unpowered camp sites where you can set up your caravan, camper or tent, with some ensuite sites available for your convenience.

While you’re staying at Discovery Parks – Balmoral, you can make use of all of the onsite facilities, including a spacious camp kitchen, laundry and activity room, as well as a shaded playground for the kids and a welcoming, crystal clear swimming pool for the whole family to cool off in. There is also wi-fi available to keep you connected, and if you’ve arrived with your canine companion, there are dog-friendly sites available.

Once you’ve settled into your camp location, you can start to explore the unrivalled surrounds. You’ll be fascinated to follow the Cossack Heritage Trail which takes you through the history of the area, including a visit to the ghost town that once was home to thousands of people but now stands empty, surrounded by the distinctive red earth of the Australian outback. You’ll also be amazed at the number of national parks to visit, including the Karijini National Park and the Millstream Chichester National Park. Discover deep, ancient gorges and hidden waterholes, and follow some of the walking trails over ancient rock formations, following in the footsteps of the native inhabitants of the land who walked those same trails for thousands of years.

Once you’ve soaked up the natural history, you can visit one of the many beaches around the area, or head out in a boat to explore one of the islands in the nearby Dampier Archipelago. Enjoy fishing, swimming and boating, or simply enjoy the winter sunshine on the sandy shore.

All of the towns around Karratha are fascinating, both for their remoteness and for their history. Not to be missed is nearby Dampier which is home to the famous Red Dog monument and Red Dog trail which introduces you to this well loved animal and the stories surrounding him.

After a busy day exploring, you can return in the evening to your campsite at Discovery Parks – Balmoral. After preparing a meal or cooking up your catch, you can relax and enjoy the carpet of stars in the desert sky and revel in the silence that can only be enjoyed in such a breathtakingly remote location.
