From relaxing on a paddle steamer as it glides down the river, to trying out every water activity under the sun, these two towns combine to create a magical Murray River holiday that your family will be talking about for years.
Good news—we’ve got the inside scoop on what to see, what to do, and where to stay (spoiler alert: it’s G’day Parks).
Once responsible for carrying supplies up and down the river, Echuca’s paddle steamers are now your ticket to cruise the Murray. Operating hour-long cruises seven days a week, this is Echuca’s main attraction.

The Port of Echuca provides a glimpse of the 1900s. Head to the Discovery Centre to explore the Interpretive Centre and view the historic sawmill and steam displays. For its creepier side, hear ghost stories by lanternlight on a Port After Dark tour.

Echuca Historical Society Museum’s collections include 20th century wedding costumes, stationery engines, and local artefacts, documents, and photographs. For a journey that brings this history to life, follow the Echuca Heritage Walk (which intersects with the museum).
For an Echuca staple, head to The Great Aussie Beer Shed and Heritage Farm Museum. Yes, you’ll see a remarkable assortment of beer cans and memorabilia, but you’ll also uncover horse drawn carriages, Australiana, cars, and farm machinery.

The Murray River is perfect for kayaking, canoeing, and paddleboarding. You can also head to the Edward River Canoe and Kayak Trail in Murray Valley Regional Park, a peaceful stretch of calm water from Mathoura to Deniliquin.

The Echuca–Moama Port Visitor Centre can point you towards the Banyule State Forest Walking Trail, which is just a hop, skip, and a jump away. You’ll be rewarded with beautiful river and wildlife views on this six-kilometre-long track.
Spot native animals, birds, plants, and fish at Horseshoe Lagoon. This horseshoe-shaped body of water makes for a short, leisurely nature stroll along the boardwalks.

Bring your own wheels or hire a bicycle at Green Pedal, then set off on a cycling trip or guided tour. Great places to ride include Banyule State Forest, the Echuca Scenic Trail, or the Campaspe River.
The MTB trails at Moama Five Mile Mountain Bike Trail are surrounded by river red gums, expertly blending scenery and thrills. There is a pump track, skills area, jumps, and riverbank picnic spots.
Maximise your time on the Murray by learning how to wakeboard, waterski, kneeboard, or barefoot with Brett Sands Watersports. You can choose a half-day or full-day package, catering for all skill levels.
Aqua Island Moama is a seasonal, inflatable water park (open November to mid-April). Book a three-hour session to conquer this floating playground; obstacles include a Giant Slide, Blast Bag, and Jungle Joe.

Barmah National Park is half an hour out of Echuca–Moama, with water that’s ripe for fishing, swimming, boating, and canoeing. Walking trails pass picturesque waterways and forest, as well as historic remnants of the land’s Traditional Owners, the Yorta Yorta people.

Mix gentle exercise with artwork on the Koondrook Barham Redgum Statue River Walk. Twenty statues, crafted out of local red gum, are fixed on the riverbanks between the towns of Koondrook and Barham. If you can’t get enough of the red gums, head to the neighbouring Gunbower State Forest on the Koondrook Red Gum Forest Walk.

Starting from the Hopwood Gardens (where you’ll find a fenced playground and picnic spot), follow the Campaspe River as you walk or cycle along the sealed pathway down to Lions Park.

Dig into a mecca of pubs, restaurants, bars, and cafés, many of which you’ll find on Echuca’s High Street and Hare Street. Taste local products at shops like Echuca Heritage Sweet Company and the Mad Hatter Tea Shop.

The Perricoota wine region is small but mighty, with cellar doors like St Anne’s Winery and Morrisons. Combine your vineyard experience with a paddle steamer cruise, thanks to Experience Oz, or get in the car to go winery hopping.

If wine’s not your top drop, it’s easy to find your drink of choice. Echuca Distillery produces craft spirits like gin and liqueur, served at their cocktail and rooftop bar and restaurant, Bar Lee. At beer o’clock, head to Bandicoot Brewing for award-winning craft beers.
On hot summer days, there’s nothing quite like enjoying an ice cream after your favourite water activities. That’s where The Port Ice Creamery comes in, with ice cream, gelato, milkshakes, cold drinks, and loaded ice cream cakes.
Fill your shopping bags with locally grown veggies, crafty treasures, and baked treats. The Echuca Farmers Market is held on the first and third Saturday of the month at Aquatic Reserve, while the Moama Market takes place on select Sundays at the Kerrabee Soundshell. Other markets worth checking out are the Hopwood Garden Market, Rushworth Monthly Market, Girgarre Farmers Produce and Craft Market, or Stanhope Monster Garage Sale.

Billabong Ranch Adventure Park is the home of family-friendly entertainment, with a fun park, camel rides, and horse riding. Their horse riding tours accommodate all ages and riding abilities, following river, bushland, and vineyard trails.
For kids who love to learn (yes, even on holiday), head to TwistED Science. STEM has never looked more fun than their AR climbing walls, and it’s up to you if you want to earn your ‘I ate a bug’ sticker.

Attention golfers! Hit the green at Rich River Golf Club, where visitors can play 9-hole, 18-hole, or unlimited golf. There’s also a Golf Simulator, Driving Range, 18-hole mini golf course, and a bistro.
Art enthusiasts will love exploring Echuca–Moama’s galleries, but you can supersize the fun in Tongala, a town covered in murals! They also run a seasonal Hay Bale Trail—check their Facebook page to see if one is coming up.
Spend a day with Australian animals at Kyabram Fauna Park, including koalas, wombats, wallabies, and Tassie devils. You can hand-feed animals, stroll the walk-through aviary, or book a specialty encounter.
