Discovery Parks - Nagambie Lakes

One of the highlights of road tripping is finding those unexpected places along the way that you can’t wait to tell your friends and family about. Feeling the excitement when you pull off the long highways to see cute country towns or one-of-a-kind roadside attractions. How often do you pull over the van, wander around, and wish you could stay just that little bit longer? Plus, days on the road can be tiring, so breaking up the driving hours with a road trip stopover can be a smart safety choice.
Why not plan ahead to stay an extra night on the way to your next destination? Forget the road less travelled—take the road travelled slowly, soaking up everything there is to see and do.
We’ve listed some of our favourite road trip stopovers when travelling city-to-city or heading out yonder, all available to book on the G’day Parks app or online.
If you’re on the march from Sydney to Tamworth, especially for the sounds of the annual music festival in January, schedule a road trip stopover in Singleton at Country Acres Caravan Park. You could very well leave as a big fan of the Hunter Valley Wine Region as well as country music!
Visitors can spend a fun-filled day at Lake St Clair fishing, boating, sailing, walking, and wildlife watching, or take to the sky in a hot air balloon. The park has a swimming pool to dive into, along with a wide range of sites and deluxe cabins.
Discovery Parks - Nagambie Lakes is a riverside stopover on the drive from Melbourne to Sydney.
This Goulburn River getaway promises water sports, cruises, nature, fishing, restaurants, and wineries. The park has unbeatable holiday vibes, with so much family fun to be had—including a pool, playground, bouncing pillow, tennis court, and a boat ramp. You might even nab a powered lakeview site on River Gum Island (two-night minimum), or a deluxe waterfront cabin overlooking the waterways.
As you travel from Darwin to Perth, you’ll pass one of Western Australia’s hidden treasures: Tom Price Tourist Park.
Whether you go hiking up the neighbouring Mount Nameless or simply bask in its majestic shadow, you’ll be blown away by the red dirt and outback scenery. On hot days, there’s a pool to cool down, and you can warm up beside a campfire on chilly evenings (weather permitting). Take it easy in your site, cabin, chalet, or holiday unit, ready to explore Karijini National Park before getting back behind the steering wheel to keep driving.
Beechworth is a historic gold-mining township that’s flush with gold rush architecture, not far from Albury–Wodonga.
It’s only half an hour to the Rutherglen Wine Region, plus there’s a top-class food and wine scene to taste in town. Choose your preference of site, cabin, or lakeside villa at Beechworth Lake Sambell Caravan Park, a popular destination perched on the edge of Lake Sambell for fishing and kayaking. Seasonal campfires are permitted in designated areas, and visitors can order fire drums and firewood. Plus, there’s a playground, pump track, mini golf, and kiosk to add extra recreation time to your Sydney–Melbourne road trip itinerary.
Gundagai Cabins & Tourist Park is set on the Murrumbidgee River, at the beginning of the canoe and kayak trail.
The heritage flavour is strong in this Riverina town, from the Gundagai Gaol to the Historical Museum. If you’re travelling from Sydney to Melbourne with kids, they’ll love a go on the playground while you relax on six acres of lush lawns and country air. It's just the ticket for reading a book or solving crossword clues. Take your pick between sites (powered, unpowered, and drive-through), cabins, motel rooms, and tiny homes.
Spice up your Brisbane to Darwin journey at Sunset Tourist Park in Mount Isa.
This outback city has everything from mines to museums, making it an excellent road trip stopover. Get amongst the Great Outdoors in Boodjamulla National Park or go boating on Lake Moondarra. Your trip might even coincide with the Southern Hemisphere’s biggest rodeo in August. The outback heat is no match for the park’s pool, before you retreat to your site or cabin.
The clue is in the name—Highway Tourist Village is a retreat after long days on the road.
Narrabri is the perfect jumping off point to explore Mount Kaputar National Park, a wilderness wonderland that was shaped by volcanoes many millions of years ago. Take in the dramatic landscapes on the Kaputar Scenic Drive, and don’t go without visiting the stunning Waa Gorge. Space fans will get a kick out of the nearby CSIRO Australia Telescope Compact Array. Then, it’s time to return to the park with its wide lawn spaces and pool. With a variety of sites and cabins, it's easy for visitors to make a home-away-from-home on this highway.
Heading down south en route from Perth to Albany? Stop at the cute as a button Kojonup Caravan Park, a quiet country stay among the trees.
Embrace the fresh air and go bushwalking, birdwatching, or golfing. In town, the Kodja Museum has interactive displays, a gallery, and a Rose Maze. Then, when night falls, curl up in a cabin or gather around the campfire by your site (weather permitting).
Say ‘g’day’ to Hay—Hay Caravan Park, that is!
Stretch your legs along the Bidgee Riverside Trail (pausing for swimming and picnics), get your history and culture fix at the town’s five museums, and don’t miss the Hay Water Tower Art. Hay is a common road trip stopover for visitors driving to and from Sydney and Adelaide, so whether you stay in a site, cabin, or cottage, you’ll get a great rest before continuing on your merry way.
Stop what you’re doing and book your next stay via the G’day Parks app or online.
