Fresh fruit is a tried and tested road trip snack, but did you know you can pick it yourself for a fun activity? Australia is packed full of growers, farms, and orchards which allow you to pick your own (PYO) produce. Head on down to your nearest strawberry patch—here are some to get you started*.

Lenswood Pick Your Own

Produce: Apples (March to April)

Nearest G’day Park: Belair National Park Holiday Park

There’s a lot to love about Lenswood. Entry is very affordable, $6 for those over 13 years old and $3 per child aged 3–12 years old. The per kilogram price gets cheaper the more apples you pick—to start, it’s $5 per kilogram up to 5kg. Kids will have a ball playing with their giant sandpit, vintage tractors, supersized outdoor games, apple row mini-golf, and simply running around the lawns. Pair your visit with locally made pies, fresh apple juice, and ice cream at their farm café and farm shop.

Paracombe Premium Perry

Nearest G’day Park: Levi Adelaide Holiday Park

The great pear hunt is afoot! Paracombe Premium Perry is your number one destination to pick pear varieties, followed by lunch at their shed door, and maybe even a speciality experience like cider making or blending. It’s $4 per kilogram for every pear you pick.

The Beerenberg Family Farm

Produce: Strawberries (November to April)

Nearest G’day Park: Discovery Parks – Hahndorf

The Beerenberg Family Farm is an Adelaide Hills institution, well-loved on South Australian pantry shelves. Rain, hail, or shine, they’ve not missed a strawberry picking season since 1975. Their strawberry patch is free to enter for kids under 12 years old and just $5 per adult, and strawberries are $12.50 per kilogram. They have a farm shop, cooking demonstrations, and a café where you can devour farm-made ice cream. Make sure you purchase a Beerenberg jam, sauce, or relish as well.

VIC

Sunny Creek Organic Berry Farm

Produce: Raspberries (December to January), Strawberries (November to December, February to March), Boysenberries (December to February), Loganberries (December to January), Blackberries (December to March), Feijoas (May to June), Gooseberries (November to January), Currants (December to January), Apples (March to May), Chestnuts (April to June), Persimmons (May to June)

Sunny Creek Organic Berry Farm opens yearly from November onwards, where you can pick your own berries for $19 per kilogram. Farm gate entry costs $10 per adult or $7 per child. Once you’ve finished picking, you’ll have everything you need to decorate your summer pavlova.

Naturipe Fruits

Nearest G’day Park: Airport Tourist Park Melbourne

Naturipe Fruits welcomes you to select your favourite summer berries and stone fruit, along with autumn apples. For strawberry picking, adult entry (16 years or older) is $10 including 500g of strawberries, while children aged 5–15 enter for $5 with 250g of strawberries included—then it’s $14 per extra kilogram. Cherries are $8 per adult and $5 per child entry, paying $13–15 per kilogram. Picking nectarines, peaches, or apples? Good news—your entry is free, with $4 per kilogram for nectarines/peaches and $3.50 per kilogram of apples.

CherryHill Orchards

Produce: Cherries (November to January)

Nearest G’day Park: Lilydale Pine Hill Caravan Park

Step into a world of deliciousness with your red bucket in hand at CherryHill Orchards. Adults (15 years and above) cost $19.50 on weekdays and $22.50 on weekends/public holidays and children (4 – 13 years old) cost $10.50 to enter, respectively. You’ll be charged per kilo for the cherries you take home, but any you munch on along the way are included in your entry price. Make sure to book your cherry picking tickets online.

NSW

Bidgee Strawberries and Cream

Produce: Strawberries (October to June)

Address: Billagha Street (off Narrung Street, opposite Marrambidya Wetlands), Wagga Wagga, NSW 2650

Nearest G’day Park: Junee Tourist Park

Go hunting for bright red strawberries at Bidgee Strawberries and Cream in Wagga Wagga. Entry is $5 per person or $16 per family, which includes two adults and three kids. Cut those strawberries straight from the vine to fill a 1kg punnet for $25, or 250g for $6.

10’s Estate

Produce: Cherries (November to December), Figs (January to March)

Nearest G’day Park: Gulgong Tourist Park

Pick up your Christmas cherries at 10’s Estate. It’s first-come, first-served, and you’ve got to book your visit in advance. Entry is $12 for adults (anyone over the age of 14) and $7 for children (3–13 years) and seniors. You can also savour delicious figs, which – like the cherries – cost $12 per kilogram.

Cedar Creek Orchards

Produce: Nectarines/Peaches (select dates November to January), Persimmons (April to May)

Nearest G’day Park: Wollongong Surf Leisure Resort

Hop aboard the ‘Persimmon Express’ for your visit to Cedar Creek Orchards, where you can book a 60-minute stroll to pick your own stone fruit and persimmons. Entry is $12 per adult and $7 per child, then pay per kilogram.

The Berry Patch

Produce: Strawberries (November to May)

Nearest G’day Park: Discovery Parks – Devonport

Tasmania’s famous Turners Beach strawberry fields make for a great day out at The Berry Patch. Pay your entry fee and pick berries to your heart’s content, followed by lunch at their café with house-made berry ice cream to finish. Their farm shop is brimming with local goodies to take home as a souvenir.

Hillwood Berries Farmgate

Produce: Strawberries (November to April), Raspberries (December to April), Blackberries (November to March), Blueberries (December to January)

ACT

Tanbella Orchard

Produce: Various (February to June)

There’s only one choice for PYO in Canberra, but there’s a wide variety of produce to bring home. Stocking up on fresh fruit and veggies has never been so affordable, with $8 per family or group entry (up to five people), then $7 per kilogram for fruit picked. Buy homemade produce straight from their orchard through summer and autumn.

WA

Perth Mango Farm

Produce: Mangoes (January to March)

Nearest G’day Park: Discovery Parks – Swan Valley

Nothing says summer like a juicy mango, and you can pick your own at Perth Mango Farm. Entry fees are $10 if you’re 10 years or older and $5 if you’re younger than 10 (tip: bring cash for a speedy entry). You’re allowed to eat a mango while you pick, then it’s $10 for every kilogram you take home. They’ve also got a wide range of produce to purchase from their shed.

Padbury Pickings

Produce: Grapes (January and February)

Address: 62 Padbury Avenue (look out for the purple “picking entry” sign), Herne Hill WA 6056

Nearest G’day Park: Discovery Parks – Swan Valley

Here’s a tip for a ‘grape’ day out! Head to Padbury Pickings—you’ll be provided with boxes, scissors, and bags to pick safely. It’s free to enter, and only $5 per kilogram of grapes you collect.

QLD

McMartins Farm

Produce: Strawberries, Mandarins, and Oranges (May to October)

Nearest G’day Park: Alex Beach Cabins and Tourist Park

McMartins Farm on the Sunshine Coast offers delightful berries and citrus fruits. The seasonal PYO prices are kept as low as possible, in line with the yearly market. Combine your visit with a Devonshire tea, light lunch, or scoop of their award-winning ice cream. Yum!

Tinaberries

Produce: Strawberries (August to September)

Nearest G’day Park: Splitters Farm

Tinaberries offers a beautiful strawberry patch, as well as a range of sumptuous homemade ice cream flavours (including strawberry, of course). You must purchase a minimum of 1kg strawberries per group at $12 per kilo, but we bet once you start picking these bright red beauties, you won’t be able to stop.
